Drawing & Art for Ages 9–14

Drawing techniques that build real artistic skill.

Every Young Artists class focuses on developing artistic skills through drawing techniques, sketching, shading, illustration, and character drawing — with feedback that pushes craft forward.

Pencil sketching techniques

Real drawing technique — line weight, gesture, construction, perspective. The skills that separate doodling from drawing.

Shading & light

How light falls on a form, how to render shadow, how to give volume and weight to a drawing. The technique that makes art feel real.

Character drawing & illustration

Original characters, poses, expressions, and short illustrated scenes. The art kids love to make and the skills that build style.

Creative art & personal style

Finding your voice as an artist — exploring mediums, building a portfolio, and developing artistic skills you can carry forward.

How a class works

Sixty focused minutes. Real instruction. Real progress.

Every Young Artists session pairs demonstration with practice — kids watch, sketch, get feedback, and refine in real time.

1

Demo & concept

The instructor walks through a technique — sketching, shading, illustration, or character construction.

2

Practice sketch

Kids draw along in a focused warm-up — quick gesture sketches or shading studies.

3

Build the project

Each week, a finished piece — a character, an illustration, a stylized sketch — applying the technique they just learned.

4

Personal feedback

Kids share their work and get specific, constructive feedback from the instructor and each other.

Skills they develop

More than technique. Real artistic growth.

Young Artists is built for kids who want to develop their own artistic skills — building technique, voice, and confidence over a term.

Observation & rendering

Learning to really see — proportions, values, edges, and how to translate what you see onto paper with control.

Style development

Experimentation with mediums, marks, and subjects. Helping each kid find what kind of art they love to make.

Art history & appreciation

Light exposure to artists and movements that connect to each week's project — building context kids can talk about.

Portfolio building

A growing collection of finished work kids can keep, share, and use for art school applications down the road.

Why parents pick Young Artists

Built for the way kids ages 9–14 learn best.

Small groups (max 8 kids)

Big enough for peer energy, small enough for real feedback on each kid's developing skills.

60-minute live sessions

The right length for focused technique work — enough time to learn, practice, and finish a piece each week.

Instructors who push craft forward

Our instructors are practicing artists and trained educators — they know how to teach drawing technique at this age.

Common questions

Parents ask us.

What level does my child need to be at?

Some drawing experience helps — they've taken an art class before, sketch at home, or have a real interest in getting better. We group by age and level so every kid is with peers at a similar stage.

My child already draws a lot. Will this still be useful?

Yes — self-taught artists often have gaps in technique (perspective, shading, construction) that hold them back. Our instructors give structured feedback that helps kids break through plateaus.

Will my child learn digital art?

We focus on traditional drawing and illustration skills — pencil, ink, colored pencil, watercolor, mixed media. Digital art tools are introduced when they're ready.

What kind of feedback will they get?

Specific, constructive, and encouraging. Instructors point out what's working, what to push, and give each kid something to focus on for the next class — not generic praise.

Is this an art portfolio class?

It's not a portfolio-prep class, but kids naturally build a portfolio over a term. Finished pieces from class can be used for school applications, exhibitions, or just to show off.

What if my child is younger than 9?

Our Creative Explorers class (ages 5–8) is built for younger artists — beginner drawing, creative drawing, drawing fundamentals, and age-appropriate art activities in smaller groups. Most kids can move up around age 9 once they're ready for more technique.
